“If you’re sitting in a warm room this photo may seem like it’s from any regular swimming competition. In reality, the temperature surrounding swimmer Julia Wittig is minus 16 degrees Celsius. That means that even if you’re outside fully dressed wearing wooly gloves, your fingers will start freezing after a short while. Julia Wittig is the female ice swimming world champion. She competes dressed in a normal bathing suit and swims 1000 meters in frigid that water that doesn’t freeze thanks to underwater wheels that keep the ice from settling. I cannot remember if I’ve ever covered ever such an extremely difficult physical performance.” – Johannes Simon | January 6, 2017 | #GettySport
